Discovery and play with voice and music

(October 29-31 and November 3, 2024)

During the Berlin Jazz Festival Moabit turns into a stage and in the middle of it all are the Vokalhelden with a singing and improvisation workshop for children aged 9 to 12 (during the autumn holidays).

Accompanied and guided by choir director and vocal coach Judith Kamphues, you will learn new things about your voice and your own creativity. The workshop will be accompanied by pianist and composer Alin Cristian Oprea.

Also joining us is the Lebanese-Canadian improvisation artist Sarah Rossy, who will teach us how to deal with different ambient sounds and the music hidden within them.

And most importantly, your voice matters: Bring your ideas and inspiration to the workshop. We will try out and experiment with vocal exercises and improvisation games. Together with the group, you can develop your own melodic ideas, rhythms, and musical sounds.

One day we will get to know the Berlin Festspielhaus together, and perhaps even find ourselves in a small performance.

On Sunday, the closing event will take place with all other workshop groups as part of a so-called community walk within the framework of the Jazzfest.

The project team

Judith Kamphues (she/her) Judith Kamphues studied stage and concert singing and music education at the Lübeck Academy of Music and the Berlin University of the Arts. After engagements at venues including the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Komische Oper Berlin, and as a concert singer, she now dedicates herself to teaching, including at the Berlin University of the Arts. She also directs the Ensemble Ultrasound, a 16-member female vocal ensemble in Berlin specializing in avant-garde and improvisation..

Sarah Rossy (she/they) is a Lebanese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Tio'tia:ke/Montréal whose work blends jazz, experimental electronics, and visual projections into ethereal soundscapes that are both autobiographical and socially conscious. Sarah's artistic practice has a core of music and sound, but has fluidly expanded out to incorporate interdisciplinary movement and visual projections. Mentorship with Meredith Monk, explorations of cultural heritage at the Arabic Music Retreat, ancestral research with the Arrivals Legacy Workshop, and residencies at Banff Center, were all formative experiences which live and breathe in Sarah's work.
In 2021, Sarah was appointed Artistic Director of the feminist choir, Chœur Maha, and accepted a role as a Professor of Music at Dawson College. Sarah's interdisciplinary practice now includes education as a tool for social justice, empowerment, and transformation. Sarah Rossy's work is a unique and compelling representation of art, culture, and the human experience.

Annika Schwerdt (She/she) is responsible for the organizational aspects of the project and is the main contact person for support and general inquiries during the autumn holiday workshop. Annika has been working as a project coordinator for Vokalhelden since the beginning of the year.

About the vocal heroes

Every week, over 350 children and teenagers aged 6 to 18 participate in the Vokalhelden (Vocal Heroes) choirs in various Berlin neighbourhoods, discovering the world of music. These children and teenagers can develop their skills and voices without any prior experience. The focus is on the joy of music and singing together. The Vokalhelden share this enthusiasm with their families and friends, performing on large stages, at the annual sing-along concert for school classes at the Philharmonie Berlin, as well as at performances in their neighbourhoods and at street festivals. In Moabit, the Vokalhelden rehearse every Tuesday under the direction of Christiane Hiemsch and Judith Kamphues at the Moabiter Ratschlag (Moabit Council) community center.

Aktion Mensch supports the Vokalhelden autumn workshop. As the largest private funding organization in the social sector in Germany, Aktion Mensch supports projects that improve the living conditions of people with disabilities, children and young people, and promote social inclusion.
